Long Text

Part 5 · 6 questions

When the first expedition set out across the ice in the winter of 1911, few of its members had any idea of what awaited them. The diaries that survive tell a story not of heroism but of small, stubborn routines: the tea brewed at the same hour each morning, the boots mended by lamplight, the letters written to people who would not read them for months. It is these details, rather than the grand ambitions of the leaders, that make the journals so compelling today.

Question 1
8 / 10

1. What does the writer find most striking about the diaries?

The ambition of the expedition's leaders.
The ordinary habits they describe.
The dangers the members faced.
The time the letters took to arrive.

Essay

Write an essay using 140-190 words.

Many city centres are crowded with traffic, and some people believe that cars should be banned from them altogether. In my opinion, this would bring clear benefits, although it needs careful planning and reliable alternatives. Firstly, fewer cars would mean less pollution and quieter, safer streets for pedestrians and cyclists. Secondly, public transport would have to be improved before any ban, so that people can still travel easily to work and to the shops. Some drivers might object at first, but experience in other cities shows that habits change quickly once the alternative is convenient. In conclusion, banning cars from city centres is a positive step, provided that buses, trams and cycle lanes are ready to take their place. It would also make city centres more pleasant places to spend time, which is good for local businesses. Overall, the advantages clearly outweigh the disadvantages for everyone who lives, works or shops there.
